Letter from the ED: Meet the ED

Hello!

Allow me to introduce myself. I am LaNeshe Miller-White, the new Executive Director of Theatre Philadelphia!

My history with Theatre Philadelphia goes back to joining the Marketing Committee in 2016, and later joining the Barrymore Oversight Committee. I’m proud to have been a part of the committees that instituted Barrymore waivers for companies led by people of color, and childcare stipends for Barrymore adjudicators. The organization I co-founded, Theatre in the X, was also nominated in 2019 for the inaugural Outstanding Outdoor Production award, a category I proudly supported including.

So what’s next? We continue to take applications for our Emergency Relief Program. If you are a theater worker of any kind and have lost money due to COVID-19, stop reading this right now and go apply

The staff and board are excited to open up a call for new members of our Board of Directors. We will soon be launching our Anti-Racism plan, and look forward to amplifying the good work that our partner theaters are doing in the realm of Anti-Racism, Diversity, and inclusion.

The question on most of your minds is probably Will there be a Barrymore Awards Ceremony? Due to current circumstances we of course cannot have a traditional Barrymore Awards Ceremony and Celebration. We have a survey open right now where we want YOU to tell us what would be most beneficial for a fall event celebrating the theater in our region.

While we aren’t able to come together and enjoy theater as we once have, there is still great virtual theater happening! I’m looking forward to Revolution Shakespeare’s “154 Revisited.” Over 50 playwrights, poets, songwriters, creatives have adapted Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets. Also on my calendar is #AllLivesDontMatter from Kaleidoscope Cultural Arts Collective (KCAC). This piece explores the conditions that many Black people face as they try to navigate in a society that views them as expendable.

You can find more virtual theater on our website at theatrephiladelphia.org/whats-on-stage. And if you have an event coming up, don’t forget to submit it! We’re currently waiving our usual fee for event listings.

Lastly, if you’d like to get to know me more, we’re hosting a Meet the ED Virtual Happy Hour on September 17th! From 5pm to 6pm I’ll be chatting with institutions and organizations, from 6pm to 7pm I’ll be chatting with artists. RSVP here to join me in the Zoom room!
