Call for Theatre Philadelphia Board Members

Theatre Philadelphia seeks new members for consideration to join the Theatre Philadelphia Board of Directors. 

Seeking applicants with an interest in: leadership, the future of Theatre Philadelphia and program innovation, financial oversight, sharing their personal and professional expertise for the future and betterment of TP. All applicants welcome; preference will be given to BIPOC candidates in service of our goal to increase diversity throughout the organization.

Individuals elected to the Board of Directors are considered essential leaders of Theatre Philadelphia. Board members are expected to have an interest in theatre and a commitment to endorse and support the mission and vision of Theatre Philadelphia.

The Board of Directors:

-Serves as a fiduciary for Theatre Philadelphia. Responsibilities include:

  • Approving the annual operating budget and audit

  • Providing oversight of Theatre Philadelphia’s financials

  • Ensuring fiscal stability through strategic planning

-Monitors Theatre Philadelphia’s vision and mission

-Advocates Theatre Philadelphia’s mission in the community

-Appoints and evaluates Theatre Philadelphia’s Executive Director

-Provides consulting in the areas of personal and professional expertise

-Maintains the confidentiality of information received

-Ensures that Theatre Philadelphia operates within its bylaws

Duties include:

  • Preparing for, attending, and participating in monthly meetings of the Board. During COVID-19, our meetings have taken the form of conference calls rather than traditional in-person meetings.

  • Actively participating via membership on one board committee

  • Supporting staff with fundraising events / promoting and advocating for fundraising initiatives

  • Making a personal gift to Theatre Philadelphia and/or purchasing a ticket to a Theatre Philadelphia event

  • Leveraging support from others through the organization’s fundraising efforts

  • Participating in the identification and recruitment of potential new board members

Term of service:

Board members serve a three year term which may be renewed upon completion for another three years.  After a total of two terms / six years a board member must rotate off for at least one year.  The only exception: a board member may serve two terms and two years if those two years are served as an officer (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer).

Send an email to board@theatrephiladelphia.org with approximately 2 paragraphs: 

  • One paragraph should provide background on yourself and your professional history

  • One paragraph should outline your interest in joining the board: what strengths you feel you can offer and what you hope to experience in your service

You may send a video (2 minute maximum) outlining the above points in lieu of a written email, should you prefer to apply in that format.
