World History with Charlie: Venice and the Doges

Local storyteller Charlie Allison presents a nine-episode series on The Most Serene Republic of Venice and its mis-adventures. Special emphasis will be given to the tension of the supreme executive position, the doge, which was viewed with an intriguing mix of suspicion and respect by the Venetian oligarchs. Taking place over a thousand years of history, we’ll examine selected episodes from this violent, strange, absurd and sometimes down-right goofy history of Venice—and how it still affects our conceptions of the state, power and the creeping rot of capitalism. Each episode is curated into an entertaining 10 minute video by Sewer Rats Productions. Fresh episodes will drop on Thursdays at 7PM starting on April 1st at www.sewer-rats.com. Whet your appetite for Italian history with a teaser video at the same time each Wednesday.
