WITCHCRAFT! LUST! MURDER! BIGAMY! MADNESS! AND A SINGING, DANCING DEVIL DOG!

REV Theatre Company returns to Laurel Hill Cemetery to offer an immersive production of a little-known Jacobean play that is part domestic tragedy, part rustic comedy and part horror story.

Written in 1621, The Witch of Edmonton is a bloody and violent tragedy in the truest Jacobean tradition, and is based on the true story of a woman who was tried and executed for practicing witchcraft. Elizabeth Sawyer lives on the margins of Edmonton’s society; vulnerable, isolated and destitute, she is feared and persecuted by the community in which she lives. Sawyer, treated as a witch, takes revenge on her tormentors by enlisting the help of the devil in the guise of a dog who is wicked, seductive and diabolically entertaining.

Interwoven with Elizabeth’s story is the domestic tragedy of a young man, Frank Thorney who is forced into a bigamous marriage with a wealthy young woman in order to restore his family’s fortunes. The link between these two narratives is the Devil Dog whose actions bring both characters to eventual catastrophe. Lust, bigamy, revenge, madness, suicide and murder are all unleashed as the Devil hunts his prey through the town of Edmonton.
