Family-Friendly Events for Philly Theatre Week 2022
Want to bring your kids to the theater? Philly Theatre Week has offerings that are sure to delight and entertain the whole family! Here’s just a few of the family-friendly events available:
Fame Jr.
Inspired by the legendary New York High School of the Performing Arts, Fame JR. is the bittersweet but ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students who commit to four years of grueling artistic and academic work.
The Ongoing Plight of the Ferryman
What do you do when you don’t want to do the only thing you have to do? This musical about finding your purpose was created by Philadelphia native and African-American Ryk Lewis, and highlights racial, gender, and neurospectral diversity through characters that simply exist in their own skin.
Silent Sky
Based on the true story of the first female astronomers at Harvard, Silent Sky explores a woman's place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women's ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them.
Surface Tension
Surface Tension takes a beautiful and daring look at a queer friendship, utilizing acrobatics, weight-sharing, object manipulation, and dance. This debut production from Company To X For addresses the fear of loss, the power of trust, and the joy of vulnerability.
Janet Wide Awake: The Hedgepeth-Williams Dream
Friday, April 1, 7:30pm - 8:30pm; Saturday, April 2, 3:00pm-4:00pm; Sunday, April 3, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Written and performed by both theatre professionals and students from Hedgepeth-Williams Middle School of the Arts, this show tells the story of two parents in the 1940s who challenged a Trenton school and its segregation policy after their children were not admitted due to their race. All performances will be followed by a talkback with the artists.
Still Here!
Still Here! weaves a story about people standing on the cusp of life unsure of their next steps, featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim and other composers he influenced such as Jonathan Larson (Rent), and Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) with the book written by Ardencie Hall-Karambe, Ph.D.
Hatshepsut
This virtual reading brings the tale of Queen Hatshepsut to life, who reigned as King of Egypt but was erased from history by her successor. Feedback from audience members is encouraged after the performance!
