Walnut Street Theatre Seeks Apprentices for 2021-2022 Season

Walnut Street Theatre's Professional Apprentice Program provides a training ground for early career professionals to bridge the gap between education and the professional world. It provides hands-on experience working alongside professionals in a specific, concentrated area. The program is designed to provide a season of intensive education and work experience in one of several aspects of theatre operation.

Walnut Street Theatre's Apprentices earn a weekly scholarship of $350 & free tuition to theatre school classes!

WE ARE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS NOW FOR THE FOLLOWING APPRENTICESHIPS FOR THE 2021-22 SEASON.

AUDIENCE SERVICES APPRENTICE, September 2021-May 2022

Audience Services Apprentices work with the House Managers in all duties before, during and after productions for our 1,100 seat mainstage. They assist with our volunteer usher program to ensure a positive front of house experience for our 350,000+ patrons annually. They also help organize, maintain, and assist customers with the theatre gift shop. Other duties include greeting patrons attending Walnut Street Theatre preshow dinners and at special events. This apprenticeship is perfect for those interested in both the performing arts and hospitality management.

 

DEVELOPMENT APPRENTICE, September 2021-May 2022

The Development Apprentice learns about all aspects of fundraising and development for a major non-profit theatre, working closely with individual giving (database work), special events, major donors and Board members. This is a very hands-on opportunity to be a significant part of a five-person fundraising team.

 

MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS APPRENTICE, August 2021-May 2022

The Marketing and Public Relations Apprentice will work with the Director of Marketing and the Communications and Audience Engagement Manager to increase attendance and positive theatre visibility through paid, earned, and owned media. Includes writing/preparing press releases, public service announcements, invites, and mailings; compiling press kits; organizing press clippings and photos for Walnut Street Theatre's archives; researching plays; proofreading; attending all publicity photo shoots; creating promotional videos for productions; expanding the Walnut's social media presence; assisting with promotional appearances and displays; and handling correspondence, mailings, and other general office duties.

 

PROPS APPRENTICE, July 2021-March 2022

Apprentices work with the IATSE crew and Props Manager to shop and build five mainstage shows and the Education Outreach series in Walnut Street Theatre's shop, which is located off-premises in North East Philadelphia. Properties Apprentices also assist in managing prop rentals, maintaining the prop shop, and delivery/load-in of props to the theatre. Props apprentices will be called upon to assist Props Manager in tech, and will be expected to work some nights and weekends. Ideal candidates would show flexibility, be comfortable working in a team environment, and be eager to learn from theatre professionals.

 

PROPS MANAGEMENT APPRENTICE, July 2021-March 2022

Apprentice works with the Properties Management to manage Walnut Street Theatre's busy Prop shop, which is located off-premises in North East Philadelphia. Apprentice assists with payroll, purchasing, managing budgets, rentals, shipping/receiving, and other various office duties. Apprentice will also assist in shopping for and building props for all WST shows, as skill level dictates. Apprentice will assist the Props Manager during tech (delivering props, taking notes, etc.), and will work some nights and weekends. Ideal candidate would be comfortable working in a scene shop office environment, and show flexibility and self-motivation.

 

STAGE CREW APPRENTICE, September 2021-May 2022

Apprentice acts as a member of the run crew for some mainstage performances, assists in the load-in and load-out of all shows, and works alongside our house IATSE crew. Apprentice will have the opportunity to learn from any/all house heads: carpenter, electrician, props, flyman, and sound. Additionally, apprentice will work in the scene shop when they are not need as backstage crew. Apprentice will work a regular show schedule (8-10 shows/week), including nights and weekends, as well as long hours during load-in, tech, and strike. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs. Flexibility and positive attitude a necessity.

 

STAGE MANAGEMENT APPRENTICE, August 2021-May 2022

Apprentices will assist AEA stage managers in pre-production, rehearsal and performances of all five mainstage productions consisting of 3 large-scale musicals and 2 straight plays. Duties include: assisting rehearsal, maintaining paperwork, understudy rehearsals, training and working with a crew of IATSE stagehands through tech and the run of the shows. Ideal candidate will motivated by working in a team environment, eager to learn, and be a good-problem-solver. Night and weekend hours are required.

 

TICKETING SERVICES APPRENTICE, August 2021-May 2022

The Ticketing Services Apprentice works with the Ticketing Services Manager and is responsible for: assisting with ticket sales, distribution, and ticket fulfillment for over 40,000 Walnut Street Theatre Subscribers (most subscribed theatre in the world!); managing, processing, and servicing all theatre group sales; proofreading; database management; working closely with the staff to provide world-class customer service; and handling correspondence, mailings, and other general office duties.
