ROCKY Extras and External Understudies

Walnut Street Theatre is seeking submissions from local actors for Extras and Understudies for its upcoming season opener of ROCKY THE MUSICAL.  Richard Stafford, Kristyn Pope, and Maleek Jackson are members of the creative team mounting this production.  Rehearsals are scheduled to begin on September 13, 2022 with performances running from October 4 – November 6, 2022.  


EXTRAS - Male-identifying ensemble members.  Strong singer movers as on-stage extras who can understudy larger roles from within the Ensemble.

ROCKY BALBOA U/S – Late 20s - 30s Caucasian male-identifying strong rock singer.  Self-dubbed a working class “Italian Stallion.” An underdog, small-time boxer, who gets a shot at the world heavyweight title. Must have the physique of an athlete.  Actors needs to the depth and gravitas to carry a show.  Exhibits brooding, darkness, but also a good sense of humor.

ADRIAN U/S – Late 20s-30s female-identifying. A pet store clerk, Rocky’s love interest, and Paulie’s sister. Described as a pale, plain-faced woman, bespectacled, who typically keeps her dark hair pulled back into a tight bun. She is painfully shy, withdrawn, and damaged by her past. Must have a strong belt.

APOLLO CREED U/S- 30s, Black/African American male-identifying. The undisputed Heavyweight World Champion Boxer, who unexpectedly chooses Rocky as his opponent. Exudes a masculine stereotype and extreme confidence in his skills and his appeal. Actor must be a strong athlete and singer.

MICKEY U/S60s-70s, male-identifying Irish character actor who sings. Rocky’s on and off trainer. Tough, angry, and vulnerable. Mickey is a surrogate father to Rocky.

PAULIE U/SMid 30s-40s Caucasian male-identifying. Adrian’s volatile alcoholic brother and friend of Rocky’s, who works at a meat packing plant. He is angry and cynical, but should have a comedic ability.

GLORIA U/S – 30s-40s female-identifying. Paulie’s love interest and owner of Fishtown Pet Shop. Described as a bleached blonde. Formerly married and divorced. Very comfortable in her own skin and speaking up for herself. Must be a strong singer/mover.

ENSEMBLE U/S - Understudying dancers and character tracks of all types playing a wide variety of Philadelphians - newscasters, fans, citizens, Arian's girlfriends, and more. 


Actors who are unfamiliar with Non-Union Understudies and Extras from within the Walnut Street Theatre School’s education performance program, details are provided below.


  • Are in the cast learning as part of the ensemble and perform in the show every night / 8 shows a week. 
  • Rehearse full-time 6 days a week, plus tech before the run.
  • Roles are non-speaking/dancing tracks, and understudy larger roles within the cast.
  • Attend understudy rehearsals throughout the show’s run.
  • Receive an expense stipend of $300/week for the duration of the production.
    • Additional Rate: $50 a show if you perform as an understudy.
    • Scholarship for free class at the Walnut Street Theatre School.
    • EMC points if desired.


  • Are “On Call” for a specific role in the cast and must be in town for the duration of the run – September 13-November 6.
  • Learn/observe as much of the rehearsal process as you’d like on your own.
  • Attend Final Dress Rehearsal and off-book by – October 2.
  • 6 required understudy rehearsals during the show’s run – typically Wednesday/Friday from 1-6PM.
  • Receive an expense stipend of $280 to cover any expenses in participating (parking for a day, etc).
    • Additional Rate: $50 a show if you perform as an understudy.
    • Scholarship for free class at the Walnut Street Theatre School.
    • EMC points if desired.
