BREAKDOWN

Show Description: Fátima lives in Tegucigalpa, where she must fight for her life every single day. Guillermo lives in Bogotá, where he is told repeatedly that he does not belong. They both find two halves of an ancient, sentient map that compels them to take a journey to meet each other. But what starts out as a mystic quest turns out to be a horrific nightmare. PASE LO QUE PASE explores the question: what does it mean to be terrified of your own culture? This play requires actors who are fluent or intermediate in Spanish.

ROLES

Fátima

A 14-year old Latina from Tegucigalpa, Honduras who is fleeing her home country. Always rubs people the wrong way, has no filter, and doesn’t care about offending people. Obsessed with anime, and her favorite show is Sailor Moon. Has a mysterious, innate belief that it is her destiny to die, whether it’s from an outside force or by her own hand. Must be a fluent Spanish speaker.

Guillermo

A 14-year old Latino from Miami, FL who is moving into his father’s home in Bogotá, Colombia. Extremely sensitive, and hates other people’s critique of his behavior. Does not speak Spanish, and it’s a source constant trauma and anxiety for him. Secretly kind of boy-crazy, and loves talking about hot anime guys. The audience surrogate for non-Spanish speakers. Can be played by a performer with basic or intermediate-level Spanish.

El Mapa

Ancient. Sentient. Violent. A living metaphor, and the point where land no longer becomes land. The physical manifestation of heteronormativity, machismo, and the collective trauma and violence of our ancestors. Exists as a map that can be seen onstage, but also has a corporeal form. Capable of bending reality to its will. Can be played by any gender or age, but they must be a fluent Spanish speaker.

Madre

A Latina in her 40-50s who plays various roles, including (but not limited to): Guillermo’s abusive stepmother Yolanda, Fátima’s dismissive Tía, a creepy citizen of another country, and a wax figure in a museum. Must be a fluent Spanish speaker.

Padre

A Latino in his 40s-50s who plays various roles, including (but not limited to): Guillermo’s neglectful father Felipe, Fátima’s father who struggles with depression, a creepy citizen of another country, and a wax figure in a museum. Must be a fluent Spanish speaker.
