Muhlenberg College’s Department of Theatre & Dance seeks a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor, beginning fall 2020. Successful candidates will be teaching artists who: (1) have a current, recognized professional practice, (2) hold an MFA degree in acting, or have distinguished professional acting experience commensurate with that degree, (3) have a record of excellence in teaching acting at the undergraduate level or beyond, and (4) demonstrate teaching specializations in the foundations of acting and at least one additional acting style, genre or training technique. These could include, but are not limited to: 

  • contemporary heightened language/embodiment (i.e., Hip Hop theatre), 

  • non-Western, indigenous or diasporic approaches/forms, 

  • on-camera acting and new media, 

  • acting the song, 

  • classical heightened language/embodiment,

  • mask work (neutral and/or period),

  • approaches to the 20th Century historical avant-garde (i.e., Brecht, Beckett, Grotowski),

  • clowning,

  • devising.


Load is 3/3, comprised of acting coursework at all levels, including an intensive 6-hour-per-week acting technique course serving as an accelerated introduction to actor training. Muhlenberg theatre faculty mentor students from a variety of cultural, socioeconomic and artistic backgrounds; strong cultural and gender competence is required. We provide artistic leadership germane to our expertise in departmental productions, including directing, acting, coaching, choreographing and dramaturgy.

Muhlenberg College is in Allentown, PA – an hour from Philadelphia and 90 minutes from NYC. The Theatre & Dance Department is nationally-ranked, with 500 students and 21 full time faculty. It offers BA degrees in theatre and/or dance, training student artists at the level they might find in a conservatory setting, but also as individual thinkers in the liberal arts tradition. The department produces an annual season of 6 full-scale theatre productions and 3 major dance concerts, maintaining a commitment to diversity of repertoire rooted in values of inclusion and social justice – a commitment reflected equally in the department’s curricula.
