Turn, a new theatrical project by M’Balia Singley, forces us to reconsider Othello through the lens of black women, feminist scholarship, and our own personal experiences. Using the characters from Shakespeare’s classic play as a springboard, the show interweaves original songs, humor, and compelling stories to entice the audience into a conversation about the ways in which societal expectations are casting the roles that black women in America today are often allowed, encouraged, or forced to play. Turn was commissioned and developed through the Kimmel Center’s 2017-2018 Theater Residency.
