The Medusa Play

Meddie is a young, Black actress striving for greatness. After a three-year drought, she is cast… in a devised play… about Medusa… with a nearly all-white ensemble. Will this well-intentioned Collective help her resolve the contradictions at her core? “The Medusa Play” takes us from the rehearsal room to Medusa’s Cave, all the while exploring questions of creative responsibility, double-consciousness, and Black artistic identity.

Shoe Box Theatre collective started out as the brainchild of the technical theatre workers at the Venice Island Performing Arts Center. We work to creatively push the constraints of the proscenium theater and engage our audience with the unique immediacy of live theatre. Our challenging, untraditional work ranges from adaptation to devising to scripted work to new play development, always with a diligent focus on why each piece feels essential now. Shoe Box is committed to strengthening the philadelphia theatre community at large by offering a high-tech venue and technical assistance for theatre makers at any stage of their artistic development.
