Hands-On History at the Free Library: The Drews and the Barrymores

In honor of Philly Theatre Week, the Free Library’s Special Collections’ Hands-on History program for February will explore the stories of two of Philadelphia’s theatrical dynasties, the Drews and the Barrymores. As with all the Hands-on History programs, visitors have the unique opportunity to handle historical materials. Some of the items for this session include 19th century playbills from the Arch Street Theatre, including those in Mrs. John Drew’s personal scrapbook; Eliza Kinloch’s Bible complete with the Drew-Barrymore family record; Lionel Barrymore’s traveling mirror; photos and autographs of the family members; and even a Barrymore Award.

Seating is limited, so registration is required. Free tickets can be reserved on Eventbrite: https://drewsandbarrymores.eventbrite.com

More on the Hands-on History program:
Take history in the palm of your hand every second Saturday with the Free Library’s Special Collections! Hands-on History offers visitors the unique opportunity to turn the page of a historic manuscript, feel the inscription on an ancient cuneiform tablet, or even spin an antique globe. Objects selected each month will be inspired by a special theme and will be drawn from the Library’s fun and fascinating Special Collections. Curiosity seekers age 13 and up are welcome!
