Theatre Philadelphia to Receive $15,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

Philadelphia, PA—National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $15,000 to Theatre Philadelphia. This NEA grant will be used to support Theatre Philadelphia's upcoming 2020 Philly Theatre Week, scheduled for February 6-16, 2020. Art Works is the Arts Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,592 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking, and will award 977 grants in this category.

“These awards, reaching every corner of the United States, are a testament to the artistic richness and diversity in our country,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “Organizations such as Theatre Philadelphia are giving people in their community the opportunity to learn, create, and be inspired.”

"We are honored to have the continued support of the National Endowment for the Arts for our third annual Philly Theatre Week", says Leigh Goldenberg, Executive Director of Theatre Philadelphia. "This funding will provide us with the resources to increase awareness of theatre in our region, and increase accessibility for audiences to see the diversity of work in their own community."

Theatre Philadelphia's second annual Philly Theatre Week occurred in February of 2019, attracting Philadelphia-area visitors and locals alike. The 10-day period highlighted over 315 performances, 96 unique events with 109 discount offerings, and 76 companies. Additionally, 4,371 tickets were sold at reduced Free, $15, or $30 price points, and generated $63,516 back to theatres.

Theatre Philadelphia's primary goals in kicking off Theatre Week were to provide a free platform for any theatre or artist who wished to participate, and to encourage audiences to see something new.

In addition to Philly Theatre Week, Theatre Philadelphia flagship programs include the Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, re-granting over $118,000 in cash awards to Philadelphia-based theatre artists, and a Marketing Speaker Series program, providing local theatres with tools and education on building audiences. Additionally, Theatre Philadelphia's website, e-newsletter, and active social media presence connect audiences to what's on stage across the Greater Philadelphia region. For more information about Theatre Philadelphia, visit www.theatrephiladelphia.org.
