The 2018 Barrymores List: What's New About the Ceremony and Celebration

Attend the Barrymores

Since 1995, the Barrymores have honored excellence in Philadelphia theatre through awards in performance, design, direction for plays and musicals, and more. On this evening, we celebrate a year of theatrical work and re-grant over $75,000 in cash prizes to artists and organizations.

This year, the Barrymores are happening on November 5th - and we're making some changes! Here are just a few of them:

1. Location

This year, the Barrymore Ceremony AND Celebration will be held at the Bok in South Philadelphia, a creative hub perfect for recognizing outstanding theatrical work and theatre-makers in our region.

2. Gender Inclusive Awards

The Ceremony will highlight gender-inclusive performance categories, instead of the traditional binary Actress and Actor categories. For each Outstanding Performance category, there will be 2 recipients.

3. Outstanding Media Design

An Outstanding Media Design Award will be presented for the first year ever, recognizing designers working with projections, video, and other digital media on stage.

4. First-Time Nominations

A new year means new Barrymore nominations, and about a third of the nominees this year are first-time nominated!

New Nominated Companies: Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, Applied Mechanics, Camden Repertory Theatre, Irish Heritage Theatre, Lightning Rod Special, reTHEATER, and Team Sunshine Performance Corporation

5. Getting There and Accessibility

The ADA entrance to Bok is located at 900 Mifflin St, just a few hundred feet down from the guest entrance to the Barrymore Awards at 800 Mifflin. There are 3 ADA compliant restrooms on the first floor of the building, and 1 on the 8th floor. The elevator is 10'x7', making the 8th floor fully accessible.

What other ways are the Barrymores more accessible? Getting to the ceremony is easier than ever! This year, Honorary Committee ticketholders will have access to valet parking. For those who are driving to the ceremony, Lyft is offering 25% off!

6. On-Site Childcare with Creative Caretakers

Childcare is available from 6:30pm-10pm. Take your time networking and grab a drink before you pick up your child!

Details: $25 per child, $15 for each additional sibling. (This pricing applies for all potty-trained children. If you are in need of childcare for a younger kid or baby, please get in touch about availability and costs.)  Register online through Creative Caretakers and pay day-of with Cash or Venmo. Space is limited, so please register in advance and no later than Thursday, November 1st. Your payment covers the fees for childcare providers and pizza. Any incremental fees collected with be donated to PAAL for their Childcare Grants program.

7. Nominators and Judges

The 2018 Barrymores recognizes work between July 1st, 2017 through June 30th, 2018. Theatre Philadelphia has made efforts to diversify our pool of nominators and judges to represent the diversity of our city. For the 2017/18 Season of voters, the Barrymore Oversight Committee selected a pool of nominators and judges who are 33% non-white/mixed, 41% LGBTQ+, and 62% who are women, transgender, or gender non-binary.

Plus, our work has continued in the 2018-19 season! 50% of judges selected for the 2018-19 season identify as a person of color. For selected 2018-19 Nominators, 44% specified being a person of color. This year’s selection also saw an increase of the number of cis-gendered women to 83%. The work adjudicated by this cohort will be recognized at the 2019 Barrymore Awards.

8. Honorary Committee Pre-Show Party

This year, celebrate the Barrymore Awards in a whole new way. Join the 2018 Honorary Committee for exclusive access to a Pre-Show party at Irwin's Upstairs with rooftop views of Philadelphia, valet parking, priority seating, and inclusion in the program. Each Honorary Committee ticket includes a tax deductible donation and helps support Theatre Philadelphia's mission to promote our arts community year-round.

9. Lifetime Achievement 2018

The long-standing tradition of bestowing the Lifetime Achievement Award will continue with 2018 honoree Paul Meshejian, the founding Artistic Director of PlayPenn, in recognition of his significant contributions to the theatre local community and his influence in making Philadelphia a nationally-recognized home for new plays.

10. More Ways to Celebrate

The post-show celebration, on-site at the Bok, will include music, dancing, performances, refreshments, and an open bar in TWO different gym spaces. One gym will have a piano bar with sing-along tunes, and the other will have a dance party with a DJ
