Meet the Barrymore Voters: Steve Gravelle

The Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre started in 1995, and celebrates the rich, diverse theatre community through a peer-adjudicated process. In the 2017-18 Season, we have 70 nominators and 12 judges that will see over 100 professional productions. Our expanded pool of voters this season represents the exciting and diverse theatre community that is thriving in Philadelphia. This entry is part of a profile series to introduce you to the voters who are an integral part of the Barrymore process.

Name: Steve Gravelle

What was the first theatre production you were involved in, and what did you learn from it?: The Villain Wore A Dirty Shirt - I learned that leading roles really need to learn their lines BEFORE the first performance

What is your education and training experience?: BA Theatre/English - Keene State College in Keene, NH. Education Apprentice - George St Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ. Arden Professional Apprentice - Arden Theatre Company in Philadelphia, PA.

How did you first get involved in the Philadelphia theatre community?: I arrived in 2006 as an Apprentice at the Arden. That program opened doors for me at many other theatres in town.

What made you want to be a nominator/judge for the Barrymore Awards?: I love the experience of going to see shows at companies I have never been to, and I love seeing great work of any budget size throughout the region.

If you weren’t working in theatre, what other job do you think you would be doing?: High school English teacher.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the theatre industry?: If you do these three things, you'll never want for work: 1) Show up on time 2) Work hard at whatever you do, whether it's sweeping a lobby floor or directing a big-budget musical 3) Be nice to people. It's amazing how many people in this business struggle with at least one of these. But if you can manage all three, people will hire you forever.

If you could have dinner with any four people, living or dead, who would they be and why?:  Scott Schroeder, Joe Beddia, Alice Waters, Frank Pinello. All my food heroes gathered around one table? The food would be right, the wine very drinkable, and the conversation lively, I'm sure.
