Meet the Barrymore Voters: Liam Mulshine

The Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre started in 1995, and celebrates the rich, diverse theatre community through a peer-adjudicated process. In the 2017-18 Season, we have 70 nominators and 12 judges that will see over 100 professional productions. Our expanded pool of voters this season represents the exciting and diverse theatre community that is thriving in Philadelphia. This entry is part of a profile series to introduce you to the voters who are an integral part of the Barrymore process.

Name: Liam Mulshine

What is your current role in the Philadelphia theatre community?: Theatre Artist

What was the first theatre production you were involved in, and what did you learn from it?: I was in the ensemble of Narnia the Musical in 4th grade. As a shy little kid, I learned that wearing the protective armor of a felt feather-covered parrot costume constructed by my mom gave me permission to unleash my inner ham in front of the whole school.

What is your education and training experience?: I got a BFA in Theatre from Boston University and studied physical theatre and Commedia dell'Arte at the Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo, Italy. During my time in LA, I completed the Upright Citizens Brigade improv training program and performed weekly shows in LA with my improv troupe.

How did you first get involved in the Philadelphia theatre community?: I moved here in 2015 knowing almost no one, so my first move was to join the Theatre Philadelphia listserv. Then I sent headshots, resumes, and letters of introduction to theatres all over town. After that I participated in the One-Minute Play Festival, got a job at the Walnut, and got cast as an understudy in Metamorphoses at the Arden.

What made you want to be a nominator/judge for the Barrymore Awards?: Although I've lived in Philly for two years now, I still feel very new to the close-knit theatre community and being a nominator for the Barrymore Awards felt like a fun way to become even more involved in the vibrate theatre scene here, as well as a way to get to see shows I might not otherwise think to check out and get a better sense of the breadth of the community in and around Philadelphia.

What projects are you currently working on in Philly?: I'm currently figuring out my next season of shows and working on writing a show based on my experience working at a sex shop in Los Angeles. Stay tuned!

If you weren’t working in theatre, what other job do you think you would be doing?: I'd probably be an astronomer or photographer. I currently AM both of those, I just happen to not be paid for either.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the theatre industry?: Say yes to opportunities that daunt you, but learn to say no if your gut tells you so. Celebrate your successes, big and small. Set reasonable goals regularly and decide how you'll reward yourself for achieving each one of those goals. Take people you admire out to coffee to pick their brain. Do things you love outside of theatre and spend time with non-theatre people to help you find balance and perspective. Be very wary of anyone who tells you you're not good enough and promises to make you "better" in exchange for money. Don't let perfection be the enemy of good. If you feel like you're sitting around not getting jobs, create your own work as a calling card (like how an unsigned band will record a demo to send to labels). Work begets work begets work.
