Meet the Barrymore Voters: Lance Channing

The Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre started in 1995, and celebrates the rich, diverse theatre community through a peer-adjudicated process. In the 2017-18 Season, we have 70 nominators and 12 judges that will see over 100 professional productions. Our expanded pool of voters this season represents the exciting and diverse theatre community that is thriving in Philadelphia. This entry is part of a profile series to introduce you to the voters who are an integral part of the Barrymore process.

Name: Lance Channing

What was the first theatre production you were involved in, and what did you learn from it?: My first major role was in 5th grade. I was the 3rd Spirit in A Christmas Carol and I learned about the consequences of not changing your ways. I did not heed my own warning and still get cast as the ominous, threatening and sinister character.

What is your education and training experience?: I am a graduate of Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, located in Santa Maria, CA.

How did you first get involved in the Philadelphia theatre community?: I am a new face to the Philadelphia theatre community. After moving from the west coast, I began focusing on film and TV. So, 2017 marks my initiation into Philadelphia theatre audition rooms.

What made you want to be a nominator/judge for the Barrymore Awards?: Accountability. I've been told that Philadelphia has a strong foundation as a theatre community and that it is slowly but steadily growing. I want to be a part of the professional Philly theatre community and believe if you want to be a part of a body you must support it. That is sometimes easier said than done. Being a nominator will keep me involved, supporting and reinforce my dedication to this community.

If you weren’t working in theatre, what other job do you think you would be doing?: Quality Control Customer Satisfaction Manager.

What show would you love to work on that you haven’t gotten a chance to yet?: Show? Singular?! I would have to say at this moment it is Thom Pain (based on nothing) by Will Eno. (But also, Torch Song Trilogy, The Comedy of Errors, Noises Off, The Pillowman, Tuesdays with Morrie, and Parade)

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the theatre industry?: Always do your best. Try to leave every audition, callback, and rehearsal feeling you truly did your best. If you don't feel you did your best, honestly ask yourself why and then seek help to change it.

If you could have dinner with any four people, living or dead, who would they be and why?:  Jesus, to have a first hand experience with the man who we have assigned so many attributes and hold responsible for so much. Plus, absolutely anything can happen when you invite Jesus. Mr. Shakespeare- to watch and interact with given the stories and preconceived notions I have of him. Would he ask me to call him Bill or Will? CREATIVE LICENSE TAKEN: Sojourner Truth- What an amazing moment that would be to watch her meet Jesus for the first time! She changed her name convinced that God had called her to testify the hope that was in her. To change your name for God who you have never met in the flesh and then get to meet Jesus. What a powerful experience! I am curious what William and Sojourner think of their effect on the world. And last, Robin Williams. From my gatherings, there are few people that have stopped Robin Williams in his tracks and given him pause. I think this room would...for a moment. Then what would come out of his mouth after that would be worth all the food and liquids that would come out of my face. Also for the selfish reason that I missed the chance to work with him, hug him, and tell him that I appreciated him.
