Marquee Dinner Spotlight on Erlina Ortiz

On February 5th, we will host the Marquee Dinner, honoring the Independence Foundation and celebrating new plays and playwrights in Philadelphia. This spotlight shares some background on the key artists that make our region a hotbed for new theatrical work.

I'm Erlina Ortiz, Resident Playwright with Power Street Theatre Company and member of the The Foundry. I am also a Barrymore Nominator.

I love that Philly has a mix of small town and big city. I love how interconnected a lot of the theatre community is. I also see so much potential for growth and an environment to foster it.

I'm currently working on Las Mujeres opening in March with PSTC! This play was inspired by Carol Churchill's Top Girls, and follows the journey of a Latinx woman in a position of power being forced to confront her choices when she is visited by the ghosts or angels of notable womyn from Latinx herstory. I am also collaborating with Nell Bang-Jensen at Pig Iron on the Caregivers Project, a community based devised piece centering the stories of people who work in caretaking.

First off I wouldn't be where I am without my partner at Power Street, Founder Gabriela Sanchez. She was the first one who saw my potential as a playwright and encouraged me to pursue that path. After that, Jackie Goldfinger was one of the first people in the city who has helped me see myself as a playwright, and of course I am so thankful for all the mentorship at The Foundry.

Orbiter 3 was one of my favorite things that ever happened. I love all those playwrights. James Ijames, Emma Goidel, and they inspire me every day. Then of course are fellow Foundry folks. Iraisa Ann Reilly, Brie Knight, David Jacobi, I'm really excited for what these peeps have coming up!

Hear more stories like Erlina's and share a meal alongside creators of new work at the Marquee Dinner on February 5th at Panorama Restaurant!
