Laurin Talese at the Kimmel Center

In February 2018, Theatre Philadelphia hosted the city's first Philly Theatre Week. Here's a recap of just one of the 80 events that took place around the region!

The scene was set on February 10th at the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater as Laurin Talese graced the stage. It was a sold out, yet intimate event. Talese was dressed to a T, and changed her outfit 3 times throughout the event. With each outfit being very elegant, it was a perfect fit for the jazzy event. Talese performed a number of her original songs, such as “Tick Tock”, “Save Your Love For Me”, and “Our Love.”

Another theme of the night was her tribute to legendary jazz singer Nancy Wilson. Talese performed a number of Wilson’s songs such as “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”, and “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”.

Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio and attending Cleveland School of the Arts, Talese then relocated to Philadelphia where she attended University of the Arts. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz vocal performance. Throughout the night Talese gave a few shoutouts to her Alma Mater, rather fitting considering the proximity of UArts to the Kimmel Center.

The show featured Talese’s amazing singing, along with interludes featuring her live band. Talese’s band was composed of Elle Morris, Julius Rodriguez, Jonathan Michel, Sullivan Fortner, Steve Tirpak, Alexandra Cutler-Fetkewicz, and Giveton Gelin. Talese’s live band played well both with Talese and on their own. As during the interludes, the band played by themselves and traded off doing solos. The show closed out with an encore performance featuring Ben O'Neill on guitar, with O’Neill and Talese performing together as a duet.

It was time well spent. Laurin Talese did not disappoint, and backed by an amazing band. It was an all-star performance by accomplished professional musicians.

As the Kimmel Center may be known primarily for Philadelphia Orchestra events, it’s a combination of larger productions and events like Laurin Talese that accurately represent the diversity of Philadelphia. Throughout the year, the Kimmel Center has events featuring different genres along, with artists from different backgrounds and cultures, creating an artistic melting pot.

The Kimmel Center has similar events coming soon!

On March 14, “Sittin In” features accomplished songstress and Philly’s own, Donn T. On March 24, critically acclaimed jazz violinist, Regina Carter, will perform.
