Magdalene | Theatre Philadelphia

Magdalene

This year for Tribe of Fools' solo performance slot we have teamed up with Brenna Geffers, Rachel Gluck and Colleen Hughes to expand Tribe of Fools' artistic boundaries with Magdalene.

Mary Magdalene, the 13th apostle, has had her humanity and complexity reduced and diminished by an all male clergy. Set in a cave turned temple, Magdalene explores Mary's experience as an apostle through the lens of being the only woman in the group. The play pulls material from the Gnostic gospels, the gospel of Mary Magdalene and the gospel of Judas Iscariot. Magdalene explores themes of the Individual vs the Institution, Spirituality vs Dogma and the threat that outspoken women pose to male dominated organizations.
