Understudy for Pearl in TOUCHTONES

Post Date: Sep 28, 2017

Arden Theatre Company (LORT C) is seeking submissions from local, non-AEA women to understudy  the role of Pearl for their production of TOUCHTONES by Michael Hollinger and Robert Maggio (Emmanuelle Delpech, Director; Ryan Touehy, Music Director; Melanie Cotton, Choreographer).

Auditions will be held by appointment on Thursday, October 5, 3:30-5:30pm.

Only seeking an understudy for the following role:

Pearl, Female. African-American. Mezzo-Soprano/Alto. Character is in her late 40s to 60s. Pearl owns and manages the phone-sex hotline TouchTones.  She runs a tight ship - attempting to keep the company afloat as webcams, chat rooms, and increasing rent threaten to shut her down.  She cares for her grandson. Resilient.

Storyline: TouchTones tells the story of two young adults, Justin and Christine, who have vowed to remain celibate until they are married. With their wedding day (and night) soon approaching, Christine stumbles onto an unfamiliar number, frequently dialed, on Justin’s phone, and calls to find out that it is a phone sex line for a company called TouchTones. As one world collapses and another opens up, Christine begins a journey of exploration and discovery that challenges her assumptions about sex, relationships and herself. Set in 1999, on the cusp of a new millennium and just before the internet explosion to come, this provocative musical explores the way we use technology in the quest for – and escape from – intimacy.

Arden Theatre’s Understudy Program:

Arden Theatre Company understudy program is an excellent opportunity to observe the production process and be seen by Arden’s artistic staff.

Understudies are invited to attend as many of the main cast rehearsals as possible.  They have at least five rehearsals on their own with Amanda Coffin, the Assistant Director, culminating in a fully-teched run through of the show for family and friends (attended by Arden’s artistic staff) on October 27.

Once the show opens, we encourage understudies to attend one performance a week to keep the lines, music, and staging fresh, and they will be paid $50 for every performance that they are called on. During the entire run of the show, understudies must be within one hour of the theatre. You will also have the opportunity to gain EMC points.
