DIRECTOR OF MAJOR GIFTS – JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Director of Major Gifts is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement. This position manages the Manager of Individual Giving and Membership, the Manager of Donor Relations and Stewardship and the Data Research Associate. In addition, the Director of Major Gifts will manage a portfolio of (100+) major gift donors and prospects and will be responsible for personally cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding gifts of $10,000 and above. In collaboration with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and the President & CEO, the Director of Major Gifts will formulate strategic directions and program development to enhance private individual philanthropic support.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Manages direct reports while maintaining his / her own portfolio of major gift donors and prospects.
  • Plans and executes a major gifts initiative inclusive of annual giving, special events, and special projects/campaigns.
  • Create, develops, cultivates and maintains a portfolio of donors and prospects with a giving capacity of $10,000 and above.
  • Attends lunches, dinners, and other major events in order to develop and strengthen individual donor relationships.
  • Develops a communication and cultivation strategy with portfolio prospects and donors to ensure strong relationships.
  • Develop a “pipeline” of potential new major donors through research of ticket buyer lists and wealth screening tools.
  • Coordinates major donor prospect work with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement in order to create a pipeline for capital campaign donors.
  • Coordinates major prospect work with planned giving opportunities.
  • Designs and implements creative strategies for building individual philanthropic support, including multi-year gift opportunities for a wide range of institutional priorities.
  • Prepares requests, proposals and reports for donors included in the portfolio.
  • Works collaboratively with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and in support of volunteers, other development and advancement team members to cultivate and solicit donors.
  • Provides appropriate tracking and reporting of all major gifts to ensure excellent stewardship of all contributions to the Mann.
  • Develops and design, as appropriate, any special materials and other correspondence to major donors.
  • Working with the Data Research Associate, oversees list development to expand the major gift and board member donor base.

 

 

 

 

Requirements:

  • At least six years of experience in major gift fundraising in the non-profit field, preferably in the performing arts.
  • Experience managing Development staff members.
  • Proven ability to cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts of $10,000+ from individuals.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Proven track record of a strategic approach to major gift fundraising, combining relationship skills with solid research methods
  • Superior written and oral communication skills: the ability to write and speak in clear, crisp, and compelling ways to articulate the mission, goals and values of the Mann
  • Intellectual depth, maturity, and interpersonal skills to foster the trust and confidence of the Mann’s leadership and donors
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work with difficult people
  • Willingness to travel locally to meet with donors throughout the region
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and evenings as necessary
  • Proficiency in development technology for prospect identification and research
  • Skilled with computers, takes advantage of new technology, and learns new tools.
